Makeup Inventory | Let’s talk numbers

In the wake of deciding to go on a no buy for makeup in 2019 I have binge watching people on YouTube who are also doing similar projects. A trend that I’ve noticed a lot of people doing is creating a makeup inventory; they’ve counted up all their products, sorted them into categories, and come up with numbers they’d like to have in those categories to compare to what they actually have. It’s a brilliant way to stay accountable and aware of a makeup collection so of course I started taking stock of my own vanity.

I thought it would be fun to document my inventory here at the beginning of the year and then again in December to see the difference in numbers. I have a rolling project pan going so that I can use up products and I also suspect I will declutter some stuff over the course of the year. I’m aiming to have a much more curated as well as (eventually) a completely vegan collection.

So let’s get into the numbers!

Foundations: I have five of these. Two are the same foundation in different colors (winter and summer shades) and it’s my favorite out of all of them. The other three are ones I would like to either use up or declutter.

Primers: Two. One is in my project pan and should be done soon. The other is my favorite primer and I’m happy to just have that one in my collection.

Concealers: I have four of these. I have two different shades in one formula and two of the same shade in a different formula. I like both formulas for different things but I think this number will be down to one at the end of the year.

Powders: This is another category I have five in. I only need one. I’m going to try to get through as much of this category as possible.

Setting Sprays: There are four of these and I would like to have it at one.

Brow Products: I’ve got six brow products. I really only need two at the most -a brow pencil and a tinted brow gel. I’m hoping to go through all my extras this year.

Blush: I have nine blushes in my collection. That’s a lot of blush. Some of those are in palettes, so it’s not nine individual compacts taking up space in my vanity, but there’s still a lot of them. I’ll use as much as I can, but blush takes a long time to go through.

Bronzer/Contour: There are eight products in this category. Some of these I’ve hit pan on. I don’t have a goal number here either, I just want to see how much of it I can use by December.

Highlighters: Eleven. Highlighters take forever to go through, probably longer than blush, and I have eleven of them. Some of them are a bit too dark for me to use as highlighters so I use them on my eyes. They’re in palettes, it’s not like I bought shades that are too dark for me. This is another category that I’m just hoping to use as much product as possible.

Eyeliners: Eyeliner is not something I wear a lot of and yet I have nine of them. Some of them are colorful liners or glitter liners, but it’s still a lot for someone who doesn’t utilize liner very much. I’m going to make a conscious effort to use these products a little more.

Mascara: I have five mascaras. Only two of them are open, and two of them mini sizes. One is just a waterproofing top coat. I want to get this number down to one.

Single Eyeshadows: There are eight of these in my collection. I have a few of them in my project pan for the year and I’m just hoping to use these as much as I can. I may decide to declutter a few but it remains to be seen.

Eyeshadow Palettes: Okay, I have fourteen of these. I used to have a lot more honestly but I decluttered a bunch of them. Eventually I want to de-pot all my eyeshadows so I don’t have a goal number here.

Lip Products: This is the big number. I have forty lip products. That’s so many. I have a few in my project pan and I know I have a few lip glosses that I’m close to finishing. I’m interested to see what this number is at the end of the year.

Miscellaneous Items: I have three extra, miscellaneous items. These include glitter glue, and two faux freckle products.

Total: 130 Products.

That’s a healthy collection. It’s not nearly as much as it used to be, but it’s still a lot of product. I’m a total beauty lover, so I’m not trying to get a super minimalist collection. I like to play with my makeup and try out new products and techniques. I do, however, want my collection to be carefully curated and well-used. I’m hoping that’s what I can accomplish this year and I’m excited to see what the numbers look like in December.

I also made a video about this, if you’re interested in listening to me yap.
